New National Honor Society executive board promotes change

Taken by Ashlyn Koester

The National Honor Society typically sees little change each year; however, the 2023-2024 Executive Board is ready to make change for its community.

It is composed of five members: Peyton Janice, Klaire Wilson, Samarah Saggers, Nolan Smith, and Emmarose Doran.

Peyton Janice was elected as president of The National Honor Society during the 2022-2023 school year, ready to make an impact.

Janice said one of her primary goals is to move away from donation-based services, such as blanket or canned food drives, in favor of in-person opportunities that more directly serve the community– this includes assisting local vet clinics, the UAW, and much more.

“It doesn’t get people involved in things, because honestly, people could just do them for their stake in the club,” she said. “We want people to serve the community for their hours, not buy them,” Janice explained.

This mindset, as Janice said, should push members to better their community through more outreach and volunteering, which is the sole purpose of NHS.

The club’s Vice President, Klaire Wilson, said she is also pushing the club to a better place but through an internal view, rather than an external one.

“It’s important that leaders serve one another, and within NHS, we are a community, so when someone has a service opportunity we step up and help them, so we’re always looking out for each other.”

This is another stepping stone in the right direction– pushing it towards an increasingly community-based club that is supported with a strong, supportive core. This development is said to continue throughout the school year, making the National Honor Society a progressive club that supports both its members and the community.
