The varsity volleyball team finished their season as district runner-ups.
They found success in the league, dominating many of the other Downriver teams. Coming up just short of the league title, they finished with a record of 8-2. Both losses were to Downriver rival Trenton.
Alongside this, they traveled to various tournaments, playing against hard teams from around the state. One of their greatest successes was coming out on top at the News Herald Tournament. They were able to pull ahead against Trenton in the championship game after just losing to them in league play.
Jalynn Wilmot, a senior setter, commented on this win: “It feels good. It was encouraging going into the league finals knowing we could beat them.”
Despite this momentum, they came up short in the league finals, losing to Trenton in four long sets. Coming out of league play, they went into districts with fuel to win. In the first round of D1 districts, they played Belleville where they won after four sets. After this, they went on to district semifinals where they won in a close-knit battle against Ypsilanti Lincoln.
“It felt good winning, I was really happy that we made it that far,” Madalyn Ferrera, a senior defensive specialist, said after this tough-fought win.
After this, the team knew they had to compete against a very well-rounded Bedford team. They gave it their all, but this ultimately ended in a loss. Although this loss ended their season, this team was able to pull out many wins along their journey which led them to build their team together. This team’s experience this season will build a foundation for future seasons.
