The Lady Warriors start their season with new faces on the court and some good head-to-head matches.
This season the Warriors have on the court freshmen, sophomores, and a new assistant coach. This year the team only has 2 seniors and some returning players from last year. They are a young team but they will put their best foot forward to win any game they are fighting to win.
Junior guard Cooper Roberts says, “Most chemistry happens when teams go out to eat together and go do activities not related to the sport which allows everyone to have fun together and grow as friends and teammates.” Trying to build that chemistry before the Downriver League starts is going to be essential to help this team grow. The Warriors started their season last week with some tough matchups against Salem and Saline.
Senior guard Elizabeth Henegar says “I think the game against Salem did not go as well as we thought, but it helped us realize how hard we need to work in the future to win.” The score of the game was 36-55. The Warriors came up short but they put up a big fight towards the end. This was the first time the whole team played together. Learning to play with each other is going to take some time but with the confidence they have in each other and their coaches, they will grow together as one team.
This year, the Warriors have a new assistant coach on the sidelines, and the team is excited to see what he will bring to the team. Henegar says, “The assistant coach has helped by making practice more fun and making the team enjoy the sport more. He comes up with riddles, plays music, and gives us prizes. He also holds us accountable in basketball and school.”
The team calls him Coach Ray, the Head Coach for the Unified Basketball Program. Roberts explains, “I think Coach Ray has helped us grow as a team by helping the Unified players because we can learn more about ourselves and grow as human beings.”
During the summer workouts, he has had the opportunity to work with most of the team. He is not just helping them improve their basketball skills, but reminding them to appreciate each other. Roberts says, “He has helped us realize that God gave all of us the blessing of having the talent and abilities to play basketball.”
The Lady Warriors go into the Downriver league where they will face some of their biggest rivals in the upcoming weeks. With the fight and determination the Lady Warriors have, many people hope to see them be one of the top teams in the league.
