Nike showcases new Team USA Track & Field uniforms
Team USA track and field uniforms created by Nike were shown to the public for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Critics around the world discuss opinions of the newly unveiled uniforms. Nike created numerous designs that were showcased and one particular uniform caught the consumer’s attention.
A Nike Track uniform for women has been circulating criticism. Jokes circle about the uniform from phrases like “European Wax Center should sponsor the team,” to “imagine MID FLIGHT.”
The concerning question that is appearing around is the thought of sexism and the denial of an equal playing field for women. Individuals question if the uniform is created for a bikini line rather than an Olympic competition gear. The people want uniforms that perform well for autonomy and comfort.
One of the top reasons for the hateful criticism was poor body image from comparing one another. On social media, Nike is promoting briefs over the shorts, but for many women the uniform is not empowering, but promotes body stereotypes and self-esteem issues.
Statistically, girls are more likely to drop out of sports by the age of 14 than boys. Critics compare the women’s uniform to the men’s uniform and focus on the belief that if there is an advantage to such a revealing uniform, men would wear it too.
Athletes should only have to focus on their competition, but now their uniform has to take up their thought process as well.
Does the uniform define looks or competitiveness? A question that cannot be answered, but is subjected to one’s opinion. The uniform should be elevated by comfort, and support of female autonomy and not be condemned to the preferences of how we view women athletes.
Other athletes are defending the design of the uniforms saying that Nike includes many different kits with a variety of tops and bottoms to choose from and it’s all due to personal preference.
Nike’s goal was to give each athlete a voice and create a desire for choice, comfort, and performance.
Instead of giving athletes various options, some may say they failed to showcase a diverse kit for all athletes to compete with a clear head.
