One of the most controversial topics in today’s basketball is whether Lebron James or Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time(G.O.A.T). I believe that Lebron James is the greatest player to touch a basketball considering the accolades, characteristics, and perseverance that he holds. James does not just show his determination on the court, but he has put just as much work off the court to get where he is.
James has some of the best and most recognizable accolades you can think of when it comes to basketball. Some of these accolades include being the all-time leading scorer, 20x all-star, 4x finals MVP, and 4th on the all-time assist. James has left a remarkable impact on the game today. An article states, “It’s the latest, and arguably greatest, accolade in a glittering career for ‘King James’ – a fitting moniker for a player who continues to have a powerful impact on the game of basketball.” James continues to add on to these accolades creating an even more stellar career. The longevity James is still able to carry today to add to these accolades has not been done by another still dominating in games at the age of 39. All of these impressive accomplishments contribute to James’ resume to be considered the “G.O.A.T”.
James is also known to be one of the most genuine and humble players. James has created many different charities and even opened his school the “I Promise School”. This was to help children who are failing and falling behind in school similar to him as a child. The school offers a different angle that students are typically more comfortable with. The “I Promise School” website states, “The school implements specialized programming – from a longer school day to its STEM curriculum with a “We Are Family” philosophy – tailored to these students that create a culture conducive to social-emotional learning. IPS also provides wraparound support that educates the whole person – with a focus on both academics and character building.” The generous act of James funding this school to be able to run is changing children’s lives daily creating a better life for them. James doing such things off the court just makes his game so much more interesting to watch. James continues to lead by example and sets a great tone for his teammates.
James persevered through his childhood to get to where he is today. James was bouncing around in homes as a child with no father figure in the picture. While moving homes this caused James to miss lots of school leaving him behind in his education. ESPN states, “During fourth grade, he moved perhaps half a dozen times and missed nearly 100 days of school.” Having hardships like this helped James learn how to battle through them which I believe helped him get to the point he is in his career today. James did not have an easy route, as he battled through difficulties through his early childhood. All of these obstacles built James into who he is today.
Jordan has set some great accolades, winning six of six NBA finals, ten scoring titles, and 14x all-stars. Jordan also has created a name for himself off the basketball court, donating millions of dollars to countless amounts of charities. A 2023 article by Forbes states, “Michael Jordan donated $10 million to Make-A-Wish Foundation, the organization announced Wednesday, calling the billionaire NBA legend’s gift the largest individual contribution in the charity’s history.” Jordan has had a successful career on and off the basketball court, but I believe James’ career and what he’s done for the game of basketball to be much more eye-opening.
James has left an outstanding name for himself in basketball and an even better one off the court. James continues to add to his legacy after completing his 21st season. For many reasons, I believe Lebron James to be the G.O.A.T.
