As the track season comes to an end, the Warriors attended Wayne County’s annual Metro Classic this past weekend. This is a way to see how athletes will stack up against others when considering placement at states.
The Woodhaven girl’s team took home a huge win, ending at the top of the charts. They ended the metro classic with 144 points overall, beating rival Allen Park by 38 points.
Along with this, 5 girls hit personal records during this meet. Sophomore Joslyn Bechtol hit a split pr of 1:05 during the 400-meter relay, aiding her group in a second-place finish.
Bechtol stated, “It feels good to know that I helped contribute to winning the metro classic because we worked so hard to achieve this all season.” All of their hard work this season paid off, and they will continue to prepare for states in the future.”
Sophomore Elliana Perugi also helped the girls by running 3 races: 1600 meters, 3200 meters, and the 4×800 meters relay. Perugi finished 4th in the 1600, 7th in the 3200, and 1st in the 4×800 relay.
Additionally, Erin Sax, Chiamara Ogbonna, Myonna Ekanem, and Maya Justice all took first-place finishes in their respective events.
The boy’s varsity team fell 15 points short of Riverview, taking second place with 88 points overall.
Senior Alessandro Felici and Junior Jerimiah Lawson both took home PRs in the 800 meters. Lawson ran a time of 2:06:19, and Felici fell shortly behind with a time of 2:08:66. Felici also helped his team take home a second-place finish in the 4×800 meter running a split time of 2:03:50.
Felici commented on the group’s performance after the meet; “It was a lot of mental prep before the meet and it was also very important that each leg of the relay was in the right mental state to keep up in the race.”
Through the course of the day, sophomore Pierce Scheffler, junior Nick Henson, and senior Evan Smith also frequently appeared at the top of the charts for their events. This helped the team rack up points ultimately leading to a second-place finish overall.
The Warriors will face their next opponents at the regional meet on Friday, May 17th.
