The rise of volleyball

The rise of volleyball

The first-ever Pro Volleyball league in the US is in its Championship week. The top three regular season standings are first place, Atlanta (19-5), Omaha (16-8), and lastly, San Diego (13-11). The remaining teams are Columbus Fury (Ohio), Grand Rapids Rise (Michigan), Orlando Valkyries (Florida), and Vega Thrill (Nevada).

The PVF was announced in 2022, and the inaugural campaigns started in January 2024. The league started at the perfect time due to collegiate volleyball viewership being on the rise.

The regular season collegiate matches on ESPN averaged 116,000 viewers, this is a 58% increase from last year.

The summer of August 2023 held a historical event during a Nebraska vs. Omaha match that held 92,003 fans at the football team’s Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. The NCAA Division 1 Women’s Volleyball Championship broke a collegiate volleyball attendance record at 19,727 fans in the venue. The same championship match was the first to be broadcast on ABC and set a viewership record for the sport averaging 1.7 million viewers.

The PVF was created to give an opportunity to build a community around volleyball in the US and give female athletes a living wage. It gives access to players to demonstrate their skills, while spectators can view high-level volleyball in America. Less than two percent of NCAA athletes become professional athletes, so this league allows players to get paid for their abilities.

Normally, volleyball isn’t broadcasted on news networks, but the PVF primary broadcaster is CBS Sports. The PVF gets exposure through CBS Sports where it is necessary to allow viewers to show their support and appreciation for the sport and for the athletes who pride themselves on their work. The rise of volleyball is so important, because of the big demographic of women players and the need for female athletes and sports representation.
