Twenty-one should be the age of legal adulthood

Twenty-one should be the age of legal adulthood

Turning eighteen is seen as a pivotal moment in people’s lives because they are considered legal adults in the eyes of the government. But in reality, there are still a lot of restrictions for an eighteen-year-old.

The ages twenty-one and eighteen are the two most important ages in the United States. They both are considered legal adults but eighteen should not be considered legal adults. The laws should make it so that twenty-one is the legal adult.

To start, eighteen-year-olds can sign legally binding contracts, or get married, but do they really know what they are getting into? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “The brain finishes developing and maturing in the mid-to-late 20s.” It is even said that sixty-percent of married couples get divorced if they got married between the ages of 18-25 . With this being said, twenty-one is a lot closer to where a person’s frontal lobe develops and they would most likely make better choices in their life.

It would make more sense for twenty-one to be considered a legal adult because over all it is more safe for everyone and not just the person . The reason eighteen-year-olds can not drink alcohol according to MADD, “…before the 21 minimum legal drinking age was implemented by all states, underage drunk drivers were involved in over twice as many fatal traffic crashes as today.”  Also stated on the website, “Enforcing the legal drinking age of 21 reduces traffic crashes, protects young people’s maturing brains, and keeps young people safer overall.”

That leads to why eighteen-year-olds can not gamble. In Michigan, eighteen-year-olds can gamble in a few casinos, but for the most part, the age to gamble is twenty-one. In this article by Joe Boozell, he goes over the places eighteen-year-olds can legally go to gamble. Gambling is also harmful and addictive to teen brains, according to the Massachusetts government.

In most countries, it is completely legal for eighteen-year-olds to do all of the things mentioned above. The reason the legal age is eighteen is because former president, Richard Nixon, amended the original law of the legal age of twenty-one. In a National Archives article, “Many individuals and groups who were in favor of lowering the voting age argued that if a citizen was old enough to serve the country in the military, then they should be able to have the right to vote at the same age, hence the slogan “old enough to fight, old enough to vote.” Just because it is legal in all of the other countries, it does not mean that the United States should follow suit.

The United States as a whole should go back to the legal age being twenty-one because not only is the frontal lobe closer to maturity but there are overall fewer restrictions on things you can and can’t do.
