The Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks met at Ford Field for the fourth game of the season on Sep. 30th, but coming into the game the Seahawks have beaten the Lions every year since 2012. But this year, the lions have a really good offense with a very strong defense behind them. The Seahawks have a good offensive team, but their defense is a little off this year.
The Lions played really well on Monday securing the victory of 42-29, the team had no flaws on the offensive side. Jared Goff, their Quarterback had thrown a perfect game going 18-18 in the air, for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns. The defense showed so much strength by providing 3 turnovers at the end of the game, with one being an interception.
Jared Goff had made zero incompletions throughout the whole game. According to CBS Sports, “Goff totaled one of the more unique stat lines in NFL history with 18 of 18 passing, two passing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown” this was a record breaking game. The Lions scored 3 touchdowns in the air, and 2 on the ground. The Seahawks were 3-0 coming into this game, their quarterback Geno Smith had played really well with such little he had. Geno had set his career high in completion and passing yards. Geno had made 38 completions out of 56 passes with 395 yards throughout the game, and with that Smith had earned one touchdown.
The defense from the Detroit Lions secured them the victory, with 3 sacks over the night, and always applying pressure to Geno making it hard to make difficult plays. This allows the Lions offense to stand out more than the Seahawks offense due to the fact the lions defense performed really well. WIthout the strong defensive core the Lions have they might not have won that game, although the offense was perfect the whole game from Jared Goff. Aiden Hutchinson was in the backfield almost every time applying pressure to Geno Smith. Aiden Hutchinson was just named the NFC defensive player of the month, but they also have other heavy hitters on their defense that provide pressure and lockdown the pass game.
Jared Goff was not the only one who had a breakout game against Seattle but so did both the running backs. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs both ran the ball for the lions. Montgomery rushed for 38 yards on the opening drive to give momentum to the Lions for the rest of the game. Montgomery had finished the game out with 118 all purpose yards, but Gibbs also had many chances on the ground and ended up rushing for 78 yards. Montgomery has run for a touchdown in every game of the season so far, showing that he is a monster for the Lions offense. According to the Detroit Lions news site, “They are currently the best running back duo in the NFL.” talking about Gibbs and Montgomery.
This Lions team is proving to be a top team in the NFL this year as they keep improving every single week. If the Lions keep improving and playing as well as they are they will certify their spot in the playoffs. They made it to the NFC championship last year, and it looks like they could make that run all over again.
