Ever wonder what running for Homecoming court or playing lacrosse at Woodhaven High School would be like? Current Homecoming court finalist and lacrosse defenseman Malik Hussein speaks on his past experience and the future of senior year.
Running for homecoming court is a very popular thing in Woodhaven High School. It is even more popular for seniors because it is their last year in high school and they want to try and win homecoming before they graduate. Senior year was one of Malik’s reasons for running for court, he said, “I wanted to run for homecoming court because it’s senior year and I want to make the most of it”. It is very hard to become King or Queen because many people run in court. When asked ways on how to win court, Malik said, “By promotion and making flyers posted on social media”. Whether Malik wins or loses court he is going to be wearing an all black outfit to Homecoming.
Lacrosse has become a new sport in Woodhaven High School. Two years ago was when lacrosse was added and any person was allowed to sign up. It did not matter the grade or gender to try and play for the team. Malik said he chose to play lacrosse because, “my cousin played and it looked fun”. When asked about his predictions for the lacrosse season Malik said, “We will improve from last year and have a better record”. Malik thinks that the biggest way he can contribute to his team winning games is being a defensive leader. He is a senior and will need to mentor and lead the younger teammates. He also thinks that the keys to a successful season are, “Just team chemistry and having trust in each other to make a big play and by being selfless”.
Another important thing as a student in Woodhaven High School is thinking about your future and finding things that you enjoy in life. For Malik, he enjoys going golfing with his friends in his free time. Malik says that he is ‘undecided’ on where he wants to go but is leaning towards either Michigan State University or Ann Arbor Michigan for pre medicine.
This is a part of a generalization of Malik Hussein’s life and what has yet to come.
