The Detroit Lions are having one of the best seasons in team history. They are currently 5-1 holding the first-place spot in the NFC North. The division is a very tight race for 1st place but here are some reasons why the Detroit Lions have been very successful this season.
The first reason the Lions are having very high success is due to their 2 running backs who have been doing very well this season. Jahmyr Gibbs currently has 81 rushing attempts for 464 yards and 5 touchdowns. He has also been used in the pass game having 18 receptions for 148 yards on the season. The other running back, David Montgomery, currently has 84 rushing attempts for 382 yards and 6 touchdowns. This is tied 3rd in the league for most rushing touchdowns this season which is already impressive, but what makes it more impressive is that the Lions have already had their bye week. Every team has had trouble stopping the Lions’ run game which is a very big factor in the Lions winning games.
Another reason the Detroit Lions are very good this year is because their defense has stepped up and has been very good this season. They are currently ranked 9th in the NFL with points allowed per game. They are allowing exactly 20 points per game by the opponent. A key to them not allowing many points is the Lions run defense is very good. They currently rank 5th in the NFL allowing 92.5 rushing yards per game. Stopping the run game is very important because it is hard for a team to be successful on 2nd and long or 3rd and long having to pass the ball. Both Safety’s Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are the top 3 in the league for interceptions. They both have 4 interceptions each which is arguably the biggest part of the Lions’ success. Turnovers are very hard in the NFL and every possession matters so when the defense can get a turnover, it gives the offense another chance to score.
The final reason the Lions have dominated the season is due to their very productive offense. The Lions rank 2nd in the league in total offensive yards averaging 411.8 per game. Their passing offense ranks 3rd in the league with 265.3 yards a game. They also rank 4th in the league in rushing yards with 155.5 per game. The Lions also rank 3rd in the league with total points forced at 30.3 points per game. The offense being able to produce this many points is a very big part of the Lions’ success because having this strong of an offense causes the other team’s defense to get tired. When the other team’s defense gets tired it is easier to have more ball control time and control the game as a whole.
