One week ago, Spain got heavy downpours that they had never seen before. This episode was the most powerful flood in recent memory. Spain is now recovering from brutal floods that have hit Barcelona and Valencia. These floods swept away almost everything, left more than 200 people dead, and at least 89 people unaccounted for.
With 20-inch floods submerging parts of Spain, people in those areas are trying to clean up the streets as much as they can, while others are grieving because they lost everything they had, including loved ones.
The hardest hit region was Valencia. In this area, there is now a shortage of basic goods, no electricity, and no drinking water. About 150,000 people did not have electricity and some still don’t. Everyone is suffering, grieving, or both.
The streets are currently filled with mud and debris, cars piled on each other, random materials from people’s homes, uprooted trees, and down power lines. It can take weeks for the streets to get cleared up, but with the help of volunteers and families that were affected by the floods, the job can get done faster.
Crews and police officers have been searching for bodies. Some were found inside sodden cars and buildings. There is still a large number of people missing, and many people can still be found. The Spanish Prime Minister said, “There are still missing people to find, homes and businesses destroyed, buried under mud, and many people suffering from severe shortages.” There were also helicopters that were saving people from the top of buildings and homes. Some of those people were stuck on top of buildings for more than two days.
It is shown that the rain should be done for now so that will give everyone time to clean up, but it will take some time. To help out the people affected by this natural disaster call this number to donate: 900-104-971.
