Following the election, and Donald Trump’s recent victory, the country of Ukraine has been plunged into a state of uncertainty and worry. The nation already has a heavy reliance on the U.S. for aid and military support. With Trump’s victory Ukraine now faces the question. Will Trump continue aiding Ukraine in their defense, or will Trump continue to make moves with Russia to continue building the nation’s relationships?
During Former President Obama’s administration, Ukraine received aid and diplomatic support to counter Russian aggression. The U.S. provided non-lethal aid and imposed sanctions on Russia to help Ukraine defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During Trump’s 2024 campaign, he hinted towards a change in U.S. policy with Russia while he continually criticized the Ukraine leader saying, “Any deal, even the worst deal, would have been better than what we have right now. If they made a bad deal, it would have been much better. They would have given up a little bit and everybody would be living,” Trump said.
However, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seems to have nothing but praise for Trump and his leadership abilities. Zelenskyy even recalled the meeting the two had in September, “I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression.”
Some view Donald Trump as almost unpredictable due to his ways of running the nation which has led to worry for other nations involving their relation with the U.S. Especially with Ukraine and their ongoing war they will need some type of support from the U.S. However, President Trump has already made deals with Russia and has made it clear he will still be in relation with the nation.
