On Tuesday, a human head washed ashore on Key Biscayne, south of Miami Beach. A worker was raking the beach when he noticed the head and called the Miami-Dade Police Department. The report was made around 8:30 a.m. This incident is still being investigated, but detectives are on the scene and working to determine the individual’s identity.
The human remains are believed to be of a male, but the person’s age and race are still unclear.
When the police got to the scene they covered the remains with a blue tarp, roped off a portion of the beach in yellow crime scene tape, and put traffic cones around the tarp.
Key Biscayne is a small island village of about 14,000 people. The village is connected to Miami by the Rickenbacker Causeway. Therefore the only way in or out of the island is to take the causeway.
People who live in this area are devastated to hear about this, and some are in shock. A woman in the area told Local 10, “This is my typical route. Our neighborhood is very safe. We have our children here; our children play on these beaches, and it’s just beyond belief.” Another man who lives near the area, Ivo Kusijamovic, said, “Everybody is extremely surprised. It’s highly unusual to find a body part on the beach.”
Even though this is still being investigated, police officers do have a ‘couple’ of theories about the death. Detective Andre Martin, from Miami-Dade Police, said, “We have not been able to determine exactly how the head became separated from the body, but there are a couple of working theories.”
Police officers are wondering if this is related to the disappearance of a teenage boy who went missing while swimming off Miami Beach on Saturday, but they said it is too early to tell.
