Spain’s Deadly Flood
Barcelona, Spain had received a major flood leaving the major city in deep trouble. The flood brought many deaths very quickly showing the strength of this storm. The floods arrived due to the major downpours in Eastern Spain that destroyed almost everything in its path. This flood left people with zero time to do anything to prepare for this huge flood because they were unaware of the severity of the rainfall.
Over the past week, Spain has been recovering and putting out search teams to find the missing people from the storm. There have been many people rescued, with one lady being found in a car after living in it for approximately 3 days, luckily her car did not flood and she was able to stay safe. The flood has also brought many deaths to the city, with the number known being 219 with a possibility of more.
AP News provided information about the aftermath of the flood,“ A week later, authorities have recovered 219 bodies- 211 of them in the eastern region of Valencia- and are searching for at least 93 people who are unaccounted for.” This directly shows the major toll this took on the community, and it could get worse if these missing people were not found soon. The emergency services have been doing everything they could, leaving them overwhelmed with the quickness of this disaster, due to the major amount of services needed such as finding and saving people.
The AP News gave the information of, “…over 70 cities impacted localities, mostly located in the southern outskirts of Valencia, people still face shortages of basic goods.” With this, we can see how bad this flood has left the people of Spain because even a week after they are still facing shortages of goods, and the food services in the streets are covered in mud and debris leaving people with not a lot of food choices.
This flood was detrimental to Spain’s society, leaving many people stranded with no internet, and a lack of supplies. This was the most lethal flood in Spain’s modern history, and this flood definitely deserved that title due to the mass destruction it did to the cities it leaked on.
A week after the flood, the people in Valencia began a protest with about 100,000 people attending. The people are protesting for the resignation of Carlos Mazón, who is the president of Valencia. The people are upset with Carlos due to the failure to send alerts of the flood and want him to resign as president. BBC gave a statistic, “ A government body is saying 130,000 people took the streets on Saturday.” This protest was massive and it was due to these floods.
The people in cities affected by the flood are being left homeless with nothing being done to help fix their homes. Therefore many people are left stranded on the streets with nothing because they cannot access their homes or they are destroyed. This protest is happening because they want to go back to normal after the storm and not live in struggles.
