Although the Beatles broke up, the 1970s is by far one of the best decades of music. The 70s is best known for the United States’ downfall featuring the Watergate Scandal, inflation, war, and Apollo 13. There was hate and disappointment spread throughout the whole world, and music was the one thing that brought people together.
In the 1970s, many singular artists became more popular such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, David Bowie, Neil Young, and Marvin Gaye. Some rock bands became popular, too, such as Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin.
One of the best albums of all time was released during the 1970s. Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder was released in 1976. This album made it in the 100 best albums of all time. At the time, it was the fastest-selling album in history. Popular songs that you might know on this album would be “Isn’t She Lovely,” “As,” and “Sir Duke.“
This album was known for being a positive album that sent a subtle message at the same time. Wonder had songs like “Village Ghetto Land” and “Pastime Paradise” which focused on environmental justice and racism and decried the abandonment of the civil rights dream.
Another one of the best albums of all time was also released during the 1970s. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac was released in 1977. This album also made it in the 100 best albums of all time. This album sold over ten million copies. A lot of what drew people to this album was the drama behind it and the drama among the band members during the making and releasing of the album.
Songs like “The Chain,” lyrics written by Stevie Nicks, had a deep meaning relating to the breakup of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who were both part of Fleetwood Mac at the time. One of their other very popular songs off of this album is called “Dreams,” which sold more than one million copies in the US alone, and reached the top spot on the “Billboard Top 100.”
Another amazing album that was released during the 70s: The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, released in 1973. This album features popular songs such as Money, The Great Gig In the Sky, Time, and Breath (In the Air). The Dark Side of the Moon is also in the Top 100 Best Albums of all time.
It was very different from the other famous songs during the 1970s. While other songs were light and tended towards salability, Dark Side was dense and bold, and people loved it.
