The varsity basketball team is widely considered by students and athletes as one of the most exciting sports teams to currently watch at Woodhaven High School. Following a deep run in the playoffs, defeating local teams such as Bedford, Monroe, and Riverview, their historic run ended with a regional final appearance against state juggernaut River Rouge. The Woodhaven basketball team looks forward to stepping it up even further for the upcoming 2024-25 season, with the goal of potentially making it to the state championship playoffs.
The roster looks quite different this season as over half of the team includes first-year varsity players. Returning stand-out juniors Bradyn Harrington and Dante Perry, along with the core group of returning seniors including Brayden Williams, Landon Williamson, Nik Votraw, Adam Budai, and Deon Robertson, are dedicated to taking the program to the next level. Their leadership and talents on the court will be critical to the team’s success going forward.
The Warriors are looking forward to many key Downriver League matchups this season against teams such as Trenton, Carlson, and Allen Park. Senior guard Landon Williamson believes the team has what it takes to be successful in Downriver League play and take their talents even further. He mentioned, “We are the most skilled team Downriver, and with the plays we have we can work very well together to win and go very far in the playoffs”. It will be a tough challenge for the team to get past the regional finals mark they made last year, especially with elite teams including River Rouge and Cass Tech standing in their way.
The team has been working very hard over the past couple of months, as they have spent constant time putting in work on both the court and the weight room. Senior Brayden Williams believes that the extra practice will accelerate the team to the top this season. Brayden said, “I think us practicing for a long time builds chemistry and prepares us for the long season we have. I don’t think many other teams are putting in as much work as us and it will show as soon as the games begin”.
Woodhaven basketball opens up their season on November 26th against Northville, but they look forward to facing off against rival Edsel Ford in early December. This team is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Downriver League, and is prepared to make a deep run.
