The Detroit Lions faced off against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, November 24th. This game was great for the Lions because of the five-interception game two weeks ago. The Lions have proved to be one of the top teams in the NFL over and over again throughout the year. This team has grown to be a top contender for the Super Bowl, which is crazy because, in many previous years, the Lions were seen as one of the worst teams in the NFL.
The game against the Colts was the Lion’s 10th win this season. The Lions have gone two weeks in a row without allowing one touchdown, which is insane to even think about. From this, we see how strong the team’s defense is. Even without Hutchinson, who was a major part of the pass rush defense, the team still overcame the struggle to defend back-to-back weeks with no touchdowns.
The Lion’s offense has been providing great numbers the whole season, but the defense has played a major role in their successes as they held the Colts to only 268 yards total. The dynamic duo in the backfield for the Lions, Gibbs and Montgomery have been the best running back duo for the past 2 years. Detroit Lions News shared, “Montgomery and Gibbs became the first Lions duo in NFL history to each run for 10-plus touchdowns in consecutive seasons” Which proves the running back’s dominance in the run game during the past two years. Although they made this great accomplishment, Montgomery faced an injury during this game and had to leave the field in the third quarter due to a shoulder injury. However, this did not stop Gibbs from providing a source of hope in the backfield.
The Lions won their game this weekend against the Colts 24-6 even with these injuries they were met. The Lions were 3-4 for scoring inside the red zone which ultimately led to their victory, and the Colts were unsuccessful inside the 10-yard line twice having to kick a field goal both times. Jared Goff had passed for 269 yards going 26-36 throughout the game and receiving a 93.4 passing rating.
The Lions overcame the Colts offensively and defensively during this game due to their ‘grit,’ as people say. They play so aggressively and passionately that they win games. The team now moves on to 10 and 1 this season, which is the first time since 1934, which is truly remarkable for this team. I think this team has the potential to finish this season 15 and 1 if they keep performing how they are.
This team is looking forward to playing the Chicago Bears at home on Thanksgiving. These two teams are in the same conference but have yet to meet each other, with the Bears being 4-7 this season the Lions are the favorite to win. ESPN News gives the stat that the Detroit Lions on, a “Thanksgiving game Thursday, which they haven’t won since 2016.” With this team doing so well this season, I think the Lions will win on Thanksgiving for the first time in 8 years.
