If you are a cat owner, you know that your Christmas tree will be a fun obstacle course for your cat this holiday. Cats love climbing Christmas trees because they are high, provide many hiding spots, and fun things to play with, including ornaments, tinsel, and Christmas lights. However, many of the items that you put in your tree can be potentially dangerous for your cat, so trying to keep them out of your tree is the safest route.
When placing where to put your tree, putting it up against a wall is a smart option, so that way if your cat does climb it and knocks it over, it has a chance of falling into the wall. You can also place your tree in a room that can be closed off when you’re not around to supervise. If that is not possible, position the tree away from furniture.
The best thing that you can do to make sure your tree doesn’t fall is to secure it down. One way you can do this is by putting a small hook in the wall behind the tree and then tying a piece of fish wire around the tree trunk. Your cat can still get into your tree but securing it will make sure the whole tree doesn’t tip over and break anything.
There are also great ways to make the tree less appealing to cats. Cats do not like the taste of bitter things. If you use a bitter-tasting pet-safe spray on the tree, it can help your cat avoid chewing the branches. Some cats don’t like the smell of citrus scents, so you can try a spray of water mixed with citrus or citronella oil. You can also try placing orange peels around the base of the tree.
Make sure that your cat is safe this Christmas season. You don’t want to see your cat choking on the branches or having it get intestinal blockage from an ornament.
