As the temperature drops and the flurries of snow begin to cover the landscape, winter in Michigan transforms into an extravaganza of lights and festivities. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a family looking for fun, or simply looking for a cozy getaway, there is something for everyone. Here are what I believe to be some of the best activities you can do in the winter from snow sports to indoor activities.
Ice Skating at Campus Martius Park In Downtown Detroit
One of the more popular winter activities is ice skating, and downtown Detroit offers a perfect rink to bring friends and family. The rink, which opened Nov 23. and will be staying open until Mar 2. allows time for anyone to come and enjoy. The park provides hot chocolate for skaters while others just enjoy the festive atmosphere. Skating lessons are also available at the park to build confidence on the ice.
Winter Hiking at Huroc Park
Winter Hiking at Huroc Park is for the people who love the outdoors and do not mind the cold. Winter can bring some peaceful and beautiful hiking experiences. Trails covered in snow, frosty trees, and crisp air make the experience very unique and sadly not done often. Huroc Park is a perfect place for an afternoon trek, where one can enjoy the solitude of nature without being interrupted by summer crowds. If you plan on taking a hike it would be very smart to wear multiple layers, wear sturdy footwear like boots or tennis shoes, and make sure to bring poles for stability on ice patches.
Tree Lightings and Holiday Markets in Downtown Detroit
Winter is not all about outdoor adventures, it is also a time to take advantage of the multiple festive activities that your city has to offer. A staple activity during the winter is going to downtown Detroit and walking through the tree lighting at night. The lights bring magic into the atmosphere, but that is not the only thing to do downtown. Winter markets around that area can carry locally made gifts, artisanal food, as well as hand made crafts. Making these markets perfect for picking up gifts for loved ones, or simply enjoying the festive vibes with a hot cup of cider.
Skiing and Snowboarding at Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard Resort
This one is for the thrill-seekers; nothing compares to the adrenaline rush you get while skiing or snowboarding down the slopes. The Pine Knob Ski Resort is a popular spot during this time of year for both newcomers and seasoned skiers. If you are new to skiing or snowboarding the resort will have lessons available to hone the skills of riding the slopes. Rentals for skis, snowboards, and other equipment that is important while riding. After a long day on the slopes, unwind at one of the resort’s many lodges for a warm drink and meal.
Cozy Indoor Activities
If you would prefer to stay warm indoors, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors during the winter season. Greenfield Village typically has seasonal exhibits highlighting winter traditions, the history of the location, and the region’s connection to the winter landscape. For movie lovers, there are many different Christmas and festive movies to watch with your family or close friends. The best theaters with new movies showing right now are The Emagine in Woodhaven, The Cinemark in Southland Center in Taylor, and The MJR Cinema in Southgate. Now if you’re more of a play type of person Downtown Detroit is the place for you. The Fox Theater is well known for hosting great plays and other on-stage performances, and Redford Theater and the Fillmore Theater host plays as well.
Sledding Down Local Hills
Even though I had already mentioned skiing and Snowboarding, there is one other way to pick up high speeds flying down a snowy hill. One of winter’s main activities due to it being versatile and fun for everyone, would be sledding. The simple activity can be done on any surface that is steep and slippery enough, but to get up to high speeds you can go to the hill in Woodhaven Civic Center Park on Hall Rd. just near Irving Elementary. Another hill in the downriver area is Broadman Park Hill in Taylor on Westlake St.
Winter in Michigan comes with a variety of different and exciting activities that could really suit your friends and family. Whether you’re skating the ice, taking thrills sledding down massive hills, or attending winter plays, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate the festive season.
