In week 15 of the NFL regular season, the Buffalo Bills came to Detroit to face the 11-1 Detroit Lions. This game was one of the best games of the season and proved to people how good these two teams are.
At the start of the first quarter, the Lions received the ball first but the Bills defense came out strong and made their presence known. The Bills defense forced a three-and-out while holding the explosive Detroit offense to zero yards. When the Bills received the punt Josh Allen drove down the field and scored in seven plays while going for 73 yards. Allen was able to complete passes and made this game one of the hardest for the Lions’ defense which has a lot of players on injured reserve. To end off the Bills first drive Josh Allen scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak.
On the next Lions possession, Jared Goff was able to complete a pass to Tim Patrick for ten yards to give them a first down but the Bills defense is showing how good they are. The Bills defense was able to force another punt giving Josh Allen the ball back. When Allen got the ball back he marched down the field and scored on a quarterback run and extended their lead to 14-0 in the first quarter.
However, the Lions’ offense was able to figure a couple of things out received the ball on the kickoff, and quickly went down the field to score a touchdown. During their third drive of the game, the Lions went for 70 yards on nine plays. Goff completed a pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown for 24 yards and that play ended the first quarter. When the second quarter started the Lions finished off their drive with a 12-yard touchdown to Tim Patrick. However, the Bills offense couldn’t be stopped, and went for another touchdown. This drive was finished off by James Cook with his first touchdown for six yards to make the score 21-7.
On the Lions next drive, they pulled out some trickery and got to the nine-yard line. When they were at the nine-yard line Jared Goff completed a pass to an offensive lineman for a nine-yard touchdown cutting the Bills lead to 21-14. To finish off the first half both teams missed a field goal. One man who stood out for the Bills was Ty Johnson, a reporter from CBS said, “Speaking of Johnson, the former Lion caught four passes for 95 yards in the first half.”
Coming into the second half the Bills offense was still on fire and they scored in four plays, James Cook got his second touchdown on a 41-yard rush to make the lead 28-14. The Lions’ offense was still struggling and had another three-and-out drive.
On the Bills’ next drive, the Lions’ defense finally put up a stop on the Bills’ offense and forced a punt on eight plays. But the offense would still struggle, only getting four plays and Goff fumbling the ball which would lead to a short field for the Bills’ offense to work with.
With only needing 26 yards to score again this unstoppable Bills offense would do it in five plays with a three-yard touchdown to Khalil Shakir, making the lead 35-14. When the Lions received the ball they were able to get out of their slump and were able to score their own touchdown in five plays. An amazing 66-yard touchdown to St. Brown would cut the lead to 35-21.
When ending the third quarter and starting the fourth the Bills would finish off a 38-yard drive with another three points making the lead 38-21. On the other hand, the Lions’ offense figured some things out and was able to score another touchdown with a 12-yard pass to Jahmyr Gibbs.
After that touchdown, Dan Campbell and the Lions attempted an onside kick which led to a five-yard pass to Ray Davis for a touchdown. Another reporter from CBS said, “The decision instantly backfired when the onside kick was scooped up and returned 38 yards by Mack Hollins. Davis scored one play later as Buffalo went back up by 17 points.” After that, the Lions went down the field and made it a ten-point game with a one-yard rushing touchdown for Jahmyr Gibbs.
To finish off the fourth quarter the Bills kicked another field goal making it a two-score game with only two minutes left. The Lions would score another touchdown but would fail to recover another onside kick. The score at the end of the game was 48-42 making this game one of the highest-scoring games of the season.
