The Tortured Poets Department album written by Taylor Swift released on April 19th, 2024 has been nominated for the 2025 Grammy Awards. This is Swift’s 11th studio album, and it has been nominated for 6 awards. This album was one of Swift’s biggest albums, breaking the record for becoming the fastest album to hit 1 billion streams.
This album was a dual release, the original album she released had 16 tracks, and the second addition dropped 2 hours later was an additional 15 songs. The Tortured Poets Department broke 4 records on Apple Music and iTunes; four No.1 singles on iTunes: “The Black Dog,” “So High School,” “thanK u aIMe” and “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, the first song by a female artist to immediately debut at No.1, biggest first-day streams for a pop album in Apple Music history, and most No.1 hits on Apple Music (69).
Looking at The Tortured Poets Departments compared to her other albums, this is her first break-up album since the “Red” album that debuted in 2012. Swift’s long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn ended in April of 2023 and The Tortured Poets Departments was later released in April 2024. Most of the songs on this album were about Alwyn and then there were a few about Matty Healy who she was with for a short period after ending things with Alwyn. A few songs about Swift’s current boyfriend ‘Travis Kelce” also made it onto the album. In comparison with her other albums, this album is a lot more poetic but still has that breakup anger feel to it. Cheila Reboyras, a senior at Woodhaven High School and a fan of Taylor Swift says “I would compare this album as a more poetic and lyric-focused album rather than vocals, like it’s not exactly pop music. It is similar in the heartbreak aspect that she uses but different in the way that it seems more of a mature approach seeking closure.”
The Tortured Poets Departments did have a lot of big songs that became very well known very fast and are big hits. The song played on The Tortured Poets Departments is “Fortnight” Featuring Post Malone. “Fortnight” has already been nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year Reborays says, “My favorite song on The Tortured Poets Department is track 12, “loml” because of the emotional vulnerability displayed in the combination of lyricism and vocals. It’s overall just a very beautiful song with sad chords that I enjoy.”
