With 2025 approaching, more people are starting to imagine themselves in the new year. This also means that more people will be coming up with New Year’s resolutions. The annual tradition of setting goals for the new year is a common thing a lot of people do. What are some common resolutions, and do people actually follow through with these goals or do they end up giving up sooner or later?
There are some very common New Year’s resolutions such as working out. This is seen with most gym memberships being bought with Exercise, a software for fitness businesses, saying January is the month where gyms make the most money due to New Year’s Resolutions. They also state there is a decline in memberships as the year progresses which could be due to the New Year’s high wearing off.
Some of the other common resolutions include eating healthier, losing weight, spending time with family, and learning a new skill or hobby. The majority of New Year’s resolutions revolve around becoming better mentally or making a person feel better about themselves. If this is the case though, then why do many resolutions go uncompleted?
The Fisher College of Business stated that only 9% of Americans complete their resolutions. This also gets crazier when 23% of Americans quit their resolution after the first week and 43% of people quit by the end of January. Meaning by the end of January almost half of people’s resolutions have been quit or given up on. So there has to be a reason behind resolutions being quit, right?
One reason could be that people just jump straight into it rather than waiting for the right time or planning ahead. Many people go right into their resolutions because of the tradition rather than actually trying to benefit themselves. This is one of the biggest reasons because people are only thinking about now rather than later. It’s a mentality that not a lot of people prepare themselves for and often fall short due to it.
Another reason why people’s resolutions often fall short is because of the obstacles they may face and they weren’t prepared for. Many people don’t plan for the things that could get in the way of completing their resolutions so they often quit it. It ties in with how people just jump into their resolutions because if you don’t look for what could cause you problems people may often lose interest when the road gets a little rocky.
Other reasons include people lacking accountability and not setting goals for themselves. These things are also important because they allow people to see progress and change within themselves, which is what most resolutions look to do. If you want to see change you have to take accountability for what you want and your goals for yourself in the upcoming years.
Now there are many more reasons why people’s New Year’s resolutions fail but these 4 reasons are the most important when it comes to why people fail. If you learn to overcome these challenges then your resolutions will probably become more achievable and will help people overcome things like burnout or feeling like giving up on their goals.
With New Year’s creeping closer and resolutions being planned it’s only a matter of time before we see how the trend will go, will it be different, and more people complete their goals for the year, or will they be the same and people’s goals will fall off?
