At the end of November, people all over the world start getting ready for Christmas. When it comes to children, Christmas is most likely their favorite holiday. Rightfully so, because there’s good food, presents, music, but most importantly you get together with family and friends to celebrate. One fun thing about this holiday is that almost nobody celebrates it the same way. Every family has their own traditions and rituals with it.
Christmas is a religious holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, and families celebrate this occasion in different ways. Some families just get together and eat and give each other presents. Some go all out and fully decorate the house with religious figures, and eat in a certain manner. But the thing that is the same is they all have a good time with their family. This is why Christmas is my favorite holiday as well. I love how no matter what you do to celebrate, the thing that remains the same is that you get together and spend time with your family.
With Christmas, something people look forward to is the food that will be served. Some of the popular foods that are served around Christmas time are things like ham, turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, and many more. In terms of dessert, some things that are staples in my opinion are sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies. There are also sides like cranberry sauce, but I don’t personally like it.
There are also a ton of activities you can do during Christmas. Some people will get together and have a gingerbread house-building contest. It is actually pretty difficult to build a gingerbread house that both looks nice and is stable. There are also things like Secret Santa, which is a tradition where you pick names, and you have to secretly shop and buy a gift for that person and give it to them on Christmas day. The opposite of this is something called White Elephant. White Elephant is getting together gifts and then getting numbers that are picked, when your number is called, you go and select a gift you like. The catch to this, however, is that someone can also choose to steal your gift if they want what you have. The point of this is to entertain everyone at the party, but it is also a fun way to give gifts. Something a lot of people have started doing again is Christmas caroling. Caroling is just when you go with a group of people to houses in the neighborhood and sing Christmas songs at their door then leave. This is a tradition, and I think it is a fun idea, but I personally wouldn’t do it because of how cold it can get outside. Of course, there are also the basic activities you can do when there’s snow outside as well. You could go outside and build a snowman or you could have a snowball fight. You can even just go to a hill and go sledding. There are such a large amount of things you can do during Christmas in terms of activity, and it is the most fun when done with family or friends.
Now, of course, something that is very anticipated is the gifts that are given and received. One common question that is asked before Christmas is, “What do you want for Christmas?” Most of the time, it is something electronic when it’s children asking for gifts. As the kids get older, though, they begin asking for cash or they ask for clothing and jewelry. It is always a problem for adults when it comes to finding out what to get their children. It’s very stressful when trying to shop for someone, not knowing if they will 100% like what you get them. Obviously, if it’s electronic, they are going to love it, but the problem with that is everyone might not have the money to buy electronics for people. The average price for an iPhone is around $1000 and that’s not including the insurance and coverage. Consoles are also pretty expensive, being about $450 for a new console.
However, expensive things aren’t the only things children like. Some kids like playing with toys and other things. You could get a kid something sports-related if it’s a boy, and if it’s a girl things like make-up kits and dolls are usually popular with them. When the kids start getting into their teen years, it becomes more common for them to ask for things like clothes and shoes. With clothes, it could still be somewhat expensive because most kids want name brands like Nike and Adidas. Most kids, though, will be grateful for what you get them so you shouldn’t worry about them being upset if you don’t get them exactly what they asked for.
