Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) at Woodhaven High School has been working hard this year to raise awareness of reckless driving. This December, they are doing Strive for a Safer Drive, with the theme “Vulnerable Driving.” The campaign aims to reduce serious traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities, especially among vulnerable road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, and increase awareness of the safety of passengers and road workers.
In December, SADD plans to have a school-wide vote for slogans for this year. Some options include Everybody’s Roads; Everybody’s Rules, and Be Aware! Show you care, Vroom with care; Safety everywhere!, Alert today; Alive tomorrow!, Safety for all, no matter how small!, Be aware, they’re there!, Slow down for a safer town! This slogan will be used throughout the year and go on things like bracelets and keychains.
On Monday, December 16, 2024, SADD had members out in the parking lot checking and keeping track of students wearing their seatbelts and students who weren’t wearing one. The main reason this was done is so SADD could see if their campaign will reach out to some students to start practicing better driving habits. The pretest students were sent as a 6-question survey, SADD is also hoping for some more growth in safer driving from seeing students’ responses.
This week, SADD will also be having a trivia about safe driving during students’ lunches. Students who answer correctly will receive a candy cane. Students will learn facts about phone usage while driving and different statistics on distracted driving.
