Many high school students say, “I wish I was homeschooled,” just because they desire to stay in the comfort of their own homes all day. Homeschooling is much more difficult than just sitting at home, the student has to be determined in order to complete their tasks on time. My experience of being homeschooled all throughout elementary and middle school was challenging. I deeply struggled to understand my courses because it was very difficult for me to read information and retain it without a visual explanation. Because of this, I would often fall behind in my classes, overwhelming myself with work I did not understand.
When I was homeschooled, I mainly struggled with discouragement and I did not have good discipline for myself. I would get overly upset over not being able to complete the simple tasks my courses gave me, and I would often give up. This was where my downfall started, I would get in my head and frustrate myself to the point of quitting. I would often move on to the next easier subject, without getting any help or clarification on what I was doing wrong. This is common in a lot of homeschooled students, they tend to get discouraged often due to the many different learning styles and struggle to find the right course to fit them. It took a long time for me to find motivation to put my best effort into my schoolwork because I was discouraged by my past attempts, but with a lot of hard work and the right courses, ultimately I was able to complete my homeschooling before I moved on to attending Patrick Henry Middle School in 2021 and Woodhaven High School shortly after.
Why can homeschooling be so convenient? It is convenient because it allows students to do their schoolwork at their own pace. Depending on how determined the student is, it can lead to falling behind, or in a lot of cases, students can excel in their work and graduate early. My friend Lana Norman is a good example of this. She was homeschooled throughout the entirety of her high school career and went the extra mile by spending the majority of her free time focusing on her work. In the end, all of her determination paid off and she graduated a year early and is now attending Jackson College. Several researches have been done on the effect of homeschooling on high school students, 78% of studies will suggest that homeschooled students do better academically, as opposed to their peers who are in public school. For this reason, many scientists will argue that homeschooling is the better schooling option and suggest to parents that if their schedule permits it, they should also engage in homeschooling.
Although homeschooling can come with its downsides, it is overall a great source of education that allows students to work at whatever pace is comfortable to them all while having an extremely flexible schedule to work around sports, jobs, or any other social activities.
