What The Detroit Lions 2025 Season Could Look Like
The Detroit Lions have been on an incredible run since 2022 when they flipped their negative record around to a positive record going 9 and 8 in the regular season. From that the Lions have been performing outstandingly, going 12 and 5 in 2023, then in 2024 going 15 and 2 in the regular season. This team struggled so badly in the previous years of 2022, but the spark is due to the new coaching they received, Dan Campbell. Campbell rebuilt this team to be one of the best teams in the league. He was drafted to be the head coach in 2021 and that’s right when the fantasy started for the Lions. Moving into the 2022 season they started poorly but shortly flipped the switch to revive their season. Moving into the further years of the rebuilding process they became one of the top contenders, but now moving into the 2025 season what can we expect to see from the Detroit Lions?
With the 2024 season ending, people are starting to speculate about the 2025 season. The Detroit Lions have made detrimental changes as of now, with Aaron Glen, the defensive coordinator, and Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator, leaving right after the divisional round of the playoffs. They were shortly replaced with Kelvin Sheppard a former Linebacker for multiple teams including the Lions. Then John Morton was an offensive coordinator for the New York Jets and the passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos last year. These two changes will alter the play style of the Lions as they are leaving behind major roles that helped them succeed so much throughout the last seasons.
With those changes coming up to the 2025 season people expect to see a major change in the play style on both sides of the ball. Even Dan Campbell brings up that, “They are a part of what we’ve been here. I mean, they have been here for four years. They are one of the major reasons why we’ve been able to get to where we’ve been.” This shows the importance of those coordinators to this Lions team, but that doesn’t change the grit this team proves to have.
Moving into the offseason the draft is coming around, the Lions have the First round: No. 28 overall, the Second round No. 60 overall. Then the Fourth round is to be determined, and the next three picks with one being in the sixth round, and two in the seventh round all to be determined. With all these draft picks we could see many great things come from the draft as they could even trade their picks for a superstar player such as Myles Garret who is looking for a trade.
The 2025 schedule for the Lions is 8 home games and 9 away games. The home games are the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Then the away games were the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Los Angeles Rams. This upcoming season looks much tougher than the previous season as they play more powerhouse teams such as the Ravens, Chiefs, Eagles, and the Commanders away from home.
This season has a big challenge for the team to prove themselves as a regular top contender in the National Football League. The Lions have a large salary cap this offseason, allowing them to have a large purchase power. They are ranked ninth in the league for total cap space available allowing them to make more moves. The Salary cap allows the “Lions to have some spending power heading into the offseason. However, with extensions kicking in over the next two seasons, Holmes and the rest of the front office must be wise about how they spend in free agency.” They could struggle to maintain cap space for next season if they are not smart about the extensions and the free agency. If they lose too much money this season saving players and bringing players back they will struggle to keep them when their next contract they offer is up.
From all of this, we see that the Lions will have to alter their playstyle with the new offensive and defensive coordinators to maintain the strength they have shown previously. They will also have to play a lot harder as their season proves to be a tougher schedule compared to the previous seasons. With the harder schedule, new coaching, and new players coming and old players possibly leaving this team is going to have to work very hard to prove themselves.
