With spring coming around and winter coming to an end, it means many things, one of those things being the return of certain sports. Spring sports start on March tenth while track is one of the sports available to do. Track is available to anyone and is a non-cut sport. Everyone is welcome and would be encouraged to come and try the first day. The first practice is on Monday the tenth and the practice will be from 2:45 pm to around 5:00 pm.
Track offers many different talents and abilities to try and experience. Track isn’t only a running sport; there are many field events that are offered and people are great at it. If running isn’t your specialty there are many other things to try like long jump, shot put, discus, high jump, and pole vault. Track can be fun for everyone and many athletes also use this opportunity to stay in shape and get conditioned for their main sport.
Many athletes really enjoy track and have a great time competing at meets and doing their best to become faster and stronger every day. Senior Nick Henson who is a state Long jumper finished seventh last year at states while also being varsity for the 100, 200, and 4×200. Henson expresses how over the past five years he has had so much fun within the sport winning and losing, “Over the five years I have done track I can truly say I have been able to have a lot of fun within the sport win or lose.” Henson continued to talk about the things he looks forward to and his expectations for Track when he states, “Things I look forward to in season are the relay teams and just overall how the team will come together at big meets such as Golden Triangle and regionals.” Track is an opportunity for people to try new things and find new strengths.
The coaches for track are Jake Hammerle, Darell Myree, and Marie Pepin. These coaches give their time and effort into seeing everyone succeed and be successful. Hammerle is the girl’s head coach while also being the distance coach. Myree is the head sprinting coach along with the boy’s coach. Pepin is in charge of the distance team as a whole and helps with other activities Hammerle and Myree don’t have time for. There are other assistant coaches to help they; are Bre Himer and Becky Jablonski who both help with throwers and people interested in pole vault. Finally, assistant coach Brain Alexander helps out with anything needed.
With track starting on the tenth, there are some requirements for participating. You must be eligible and have no more than two or more E’s in any classes. You may show up to practice, but you will be held accountable and have to do schoolwork first before participating. If you plan on running in meets you must also come to practices and put track first. track offers many meets for both experienced and non-experienced runners so everyone can have an enjoyable time.
So if you have a desire to push and become better come and try out for the team. Coaches are excited for all to come. Hopefully to see you there also.
