With winter coming to an end, lacrosse season is starting up. For anyone involved, this season is going to be an action-packed one. March 10th on the practice field at Woodhaven High School is tryouts; with last year’s seniors not being with us anymore Coach Michal Cleary is looking for new athletic players and also determined ones. Since the sport is in its third year, trying out for the team will give you a good chance at making the team.
Last year was a good year for the most part for the Woodhaven lacrosse team as they broke last year’s win-to-loss record by 2 games. It might not seem like a lot but for a team that only won 2 games it is a big step in the second year of the program.
The downside to this new season is that we lost one of the highest-scoring players. Logan Menge has 1 goal a game and topping out at 3 goals a game. He moved on to a college team playing at Central as an attack. The good news is we have the juniors from last year becoming seniors and getting their chance to really step up. Another player who was out for most of the season last year due to a broken finger Margil Jasso one of 2 of the leading defensive players stopped 60 percent of the shot opportunities the opposite tried creating.
Also, getting into it is our goalie, Conner Kubrak, who trained all last season and some of the late winter and early spring. He is the root of the team, making a ridiculous amount of stops last season when we needed them most. I’m looking forward to an even better year for the senior goalie.
Also with the new season starting the team gets a new schedule, getting placed against more fair teams and even one new team, giving Woodhaven a better chance at a better record.
Allan Park is also stepping up their game with Woodhavens the first year they beat them with little to no effort. This changed last year as they won their first game against them with a tough fight. When it came to the second game they had a harder time keeping up, ending up with a hard-fought loss. Getting into the new year Woodhaven is looking to get their place back as the better team. As of now all we can do is wait.
