Since you were a kid, what is the one question you have heard time and time again? “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As you got older that question changed to “What college do you want to go to?” Or “What do you have to do to achieve this career?” Well, it is time for seniors nationwide to decide what schools they will attend next year.
Here at WHS, most of our school is the current senior class of 2025. Those students are starting to make their final decisions on where to go to further their education or career. The WHS Newspaper teacher, Mrs. Williams, sent out a Google form to all of the seniors asking what colleges/trade schools they have applied to or been accepted to.
Of the 23 responses, the most popular school is Wayne State University with 11 people applying and at least five of them being accepted. One person has said they are going to the Firefighting Academy. The next most popular school is Eastern Michigan University.
There are five historically black colleges and universities that have been listed as schools to someone who applied. Another one of the top schools students are applying to or going to is Central Michigan. With all of these options it’s going to be interesting to see what schools the seniors this year will be representing at Decision Day in May.
As much as students have said what they want to do in their futures and where they are committing to, there are still students who are undecided or don’t have their futures fully planned out. As stated before kids have been asked the same questions for years, it is now time for those questions to become a reality and be answered for the final time. As a senior student you are expected to have your life planned out, what college you are attending, how long you will study, what you want to do after that, where you want to live, what your dream house looks like, where is it? These are all questions that people ask and think about every day.
Another option for schooling is trade school instead of a traditional college. A trade that one senior is doing is the fire academy. The majority of the schools being applied to are schools in Michigan. A reason for this could possibly be that when you go to school out of state, there are usually fees involved and if you aren’t on a scholarship it can be hard for you to afford that in some cases.
An opportunity the school offers that many people use to their advantage is Ms.Z our college advisor plans plenty of college visit trips, as well as school advisors visiting our school. This gives students an opportunity to see these schools in person, speak to current students if possible, as well as speak with the school staff directly. I think this is something that has helped many people figure out what they would like to do going forward and make the final decisions to the question, what do you want to be when you grow up?
