Woodhaven baseball typically hosts pre-season workouts for all baseball players who are interested in trying out for the team. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen events, the Woodhaven baseball program was unable to do the usual pre-season workouts.
The baseball season kicks off with two days of tryouts typically around the 10th through the 13th. This season tryouts took place on the 10th and 11th of March. Tryouts are held at Woodhaven’s turf baseball fields. Tryouts are led by head coach Farner and are assisted by a staff of coaches, who are in charge of the freshman and jv baseball teams.
Over the past couple of years, the baseball program has decided to cut the three-day tryout plan down to only two days. After the tryouts are all said and done, the coaches will select players and put them on what teams they feel the player is best suited for.
The Woodhaven baseball team has a busy schedule for this season. A scrimmage is planned for March 19th. The varsity team is being figured out just one week before the scrimmage is set to play out.
Throughout the season, Woodhaven has many games to play. With the first game of the regular baseball season beginning on April 4th. This season may be tough for the team due to the loss of eleven seniors from last year’s team. This loss of seniors will have a huge impact on the open spots in the varsity roster. With only five returning players on varsity this season, the team will have to work hard.
The varsity team is led by head coach Corey Farner and assistant coaches Brinson and Ortman. The varsity team has lost a coach since last year, so without the hitting coach, one of the coaches will have to step up and take on the hitting coach role.
Woodhaven is scheduled to play around 40 games this coming season. Fortunately for the team, due to the recent construction of the new all turf baseball fields, the vast majority of baseball games this season are held at Woodhavens field.
Woodhaven losing eleven seniors means that the team has also lost a lot of pitching capability. The team might struggle with finding good pitching this season, and that is something they will need to overcome. With Andrew Phillips, Paul Kenison, and Gary Pilgrim (Woodhavens’ top three pitchers last season) no longer on the team, many players will have to step up in order to make an impact on the mound.
With the upcoming scrimmage against Airport, Woodhaven will need to figure out who will be their biggest impact on the mound, and who will be in what position for the season.
