A woman trapped inside of a home in Southgate that exploded Thursday morning has died. Southgate police on Fox 2 confirmed that the woman died after being hospitalized following the blast. The 37-year-old woman was trapped inside the remains of a home under a pile of debris. The woman’s husband was also involved in the explosion but survived and was able to be taken to the hospital. He is currently under critical care.
At 5:30 a.m., crews rushed to the homes on the corner of Burns and Edison in Southgate. Southgate firefighters are still investigating the incident and what caused the explosion.
Southgate Police Detective Sgt. Nathan Mosczynski said police officers were the first to arrive at the scene and were able to pull the man from the yard. Mosczynski also said that he has not seen anything like this in a long time and urges people to stay away. “The debris field is for several blocks. We have a large amount to start cleaning up. We want to make sure the public is safe from potential gas issues,” he said.
Mosczynski said they’re still investigating but believe the cause to be a gas leak.
“We’re treating this as a gas-related incident at this point. The fire department and DTE still have a large amount of investigation to do, and the root cause is still unknown,” Mosczynski said.
Another home was leveled in the explosion. A second home also caught fire. Allegedly, the blast was so strong that it sent a couch flying into a home. A video from Fox 2 shows the couch on the front lawn of a home north of the explosion.
