Have you ever wondered what makes a classic movie so special? Many people believe that classic movies reflect traditional values that can be important to learn and understand when you are growing up. Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a prime example of this.
Disney’s original 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs follows a classic fairytale in which Snow White’s wicked stepmother is obsessed with being the fairest in all the land. When she recognizes Snow White’s beauty is greater than her own, jealousy consumes her, and she sends people to kill Snow White. Running for her life, Snow White stumbles into a cottage in the woods, where she meets the seven dwarfs and works as a housekeeper and lives peacefully with them. Though her peace is short-lived, she is soon found by her stepmother, who gives her a poisoned apple disguised as an old woman, putting her into a deep sleep where she can only be awakened by her true love’s kiss. She is eventually found by a prince who has seen her before, and he kisses her, breaking the curse. The original film represents Snow White as a sweet, gentle, and innocent young girl with fair skin and a bird-like voice who is just trying to get through life peacefully–despite dealing with numerous things being thrown her way.
However, upon the recent release of Disney’s live-action version of Snow White, Fans are expressing their disappointment regarding some major changes to the storyline in the film. In the 2025 remake, the movie starts showing how Snow White got her name from a storm of snow she bravely survived as an infant, instead of the original reason behind her name being “skin as white as snow.” Throughout the live-action remake, Snow White can be seen as more of a fierce and bold leader rather than a shy, reserved young girl. She is not concerned with finding her true love and keeps her main focus on becoming a stronger leader. Although those are all good characteristics for a modern-day character, Fans are adamant that this version does not represent the original Snow White’s character at all and feel it is disconnected from the original storyline.
Why did some people choose not to see the new film? One major reason Disney has been criticized is due to their use of CGI for portraying the seven dwarfs, instead of casting real actors. This sparked a lot of backlash, especially from little people in the acting community who were robbed of that opportunity. Other people said that the acting was terrible from all the characters, and it seemed more like a Broadway show than a live-action Disney movie. Many were disappointed the film lacked the same kind of authenticity as the original. Lastly, viewers felt that Rachel Zegler was not the right choice for the role of Snow White, saying she did not capture the full essence of the beloved Snow White.
Overall, the modernization of the remake left it feeling like a completely different story with entirely new characters, leaving many fans uninterested in even seeing it.
