What was thought to be a fun day out on the water in sunny Havasu city quickly turned into a major disaster out on the water. A speedboat race was taking place out on the lake when one of the boats went flying straight up into the air.
On a bright and sunny Saturday, April 26th, the speedboat was “screaming” across the water when the driver lost control of the boat, and the boat was sent straight into the air. Both drivers who were in the boat at the time managed to walk away from the incident with minor injuries.
The carnage was suspected to be due to high wind speeds that day out on the water. Rae Lee and Jeff Clark speculate, “That windy conditions might’ve played a double-edged role. Sure, the wind probably caused the launch, but it also may have slowed the descent enough to prevent tragedy.” These dangerous winds are the top reason behind the boat’s wild behavior and are the most likely cause that could have sent the boat flying.
Experts on the matter give input as to why they believe the boat could have flown out of the water. They believe that the tunnel holes on the bottom of the boat may have packed too much air, leading to the boat jumping up, instead of the boat riding the surface of the water. The boat was going at a top speed of around 200 miles per hour, which caused the boat’s tunnel holes to become haywire.
Witness Noland said, “It was just the scariest thing, as a boater, that I’ve witnessed. I thought that there would be no possible way for that to be a survivable accident. But, from what I’m hearing, they hit the water upside down at 165.” Witnesses cannot believe that the drivers of the boat made it out of the wreck with minor injuries due to the fact of how fast the boat hit the water so fast. Many say the two drivers are the “Luckiest boaters.” The two drivers received a couple of broken bones and a fractured kneecap. First responders were able to make it to the wreck within a minute of the crash happening.
