17-year-old Olivia Rodrigo has transformed into the world’s biggest star overnight with her smash hit “Drivers License.” The song debuted on January 9, 2021, instantly receiving attention from fans all over the world.

The so-called story behind the song expresses Olivia’s broken heart due to her ex, Joshua Bassett, a 20-year-old musician, and how he has moved on with another relationship since their breakup. There are several lyrics in the song such as, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl,” and, “She’s so much older than me,” that confirms that she is describing Joshua’s new girlfriend, the 21-year old Sabrina Carpenter. The song explains that getting her driver’s license is something that they previously had talked about and planned on doing together as a couple before the breakup.

The song was declared #1 on the U.S. based Billboard Hot 100 Chart, the Billboard Global 200 chart, the Spotify Chart, and on Tik Tok. Rodrigo’s hit single broke records on Spotify for having the most streams within 24 hours, and thousands of people around the globe were creating videos on Tik Tok with the song spinning it in their own way. Many other musicians were inspired by her song and have written several responses to how different points of view from her story might see the situation differently. Only days after the song release, these trending videos along with many others all helped it become the platform’s top song. Olivia’s producer Dan Nigro, helped her write certain parts of it and she reveals to NME that her song-writing is inspired by Taylor Swift.

Every time I get in the car to go somewhere or listen to music in my headphones, “Drivers License,” is for sure my go-to song to listen to. I love how the lyrics have meaning behind them and are so relatable to so many people around the world, including myself. The fact that Olivia is only 17 years old, and has gained so much success in such little time is so inspiring for girls everywhere to work hard to achieve their dreams even if something goes wrong.
