The cross country season is coming to a close as our Woodhaven Warriors finish off strong in the Downriver League yet again, securing the championship for the boys’ and girls’ races. This is not abnormal for our Warriors; after this great victory, the boys have taken home two consecutive championships, and the girls are on their third. It is certain that these Warriors are working hard and will go the distance.
Over the years, Woodhaven’s cross country team has dominated the league, suffering only a few losses in its reign of victory. Largely contributing to the more recent victories are superstars Charley McKay and Pierce Scheffler; both of these runners have rocked cross country and set a new standard for runners wishing to compete against the Woodhaven Warriors. Charley finished first in the girls’ race as the only runner under 19 minutes with a time of 18:57. Pierce also took first with a time of 16:02, beating over 100 other runners.
What’s even more incredible is that the runners trailing these superstars were some of our warriors. Hope Noal secured second place in the girls’ race with a time of 19:15, and shortly behind followed Annabelle Chan in fourth, finishing with a 19:32. In the boys’ race, following behind Pierce was Alex Vazquez in third with a time of 16:22, with Woodhaven also securing fourth and fifth place.
The Woodhaven Warriors show no signs of slowing down in the future, as some of its greatest prospects are underclassmen. We’re excited to see what they do next at regionals, and we’re hopeful for the future track season in the spring.
