On October 6th the Woodhaven marching band went to flat rock for the MSBOA (Michigan’s School Band and Orchestra Association). That night Woodhaven scored all 1s. This is the third year in a row that the marching band has got all ones. To get all ones it has to be perfect and there can not be a minor mistake. From scoring all ones this helps promote the band and helps the band know if we are doing the right thing. This also means if the band director decides we can go to the state festival, the state festival is a big event for bands. It is an event where all the bands that qualified compete to see who’s the best. All Band students can earn a medal for this high achievement.
The marching band played their show Motown featuring superstition by Stevie Wonder, respect by Athena Franklin, seven nation army by the White Stripes, J Dilla, no man can change the world Big Sean, not afraid by Eminem, and old time rock and roll by Bob Sager.
How MSBOA Scoring works
The MSBOA scoring goes into three different sections: music, marching, and general effect.
The general effect is while you are marching how good your image looks to the audience.
For the music portion the judges will look at the piece beforehand and hear how it is supposed to be played then when the marching band goes on the stage to perform they compare it to how it was heard initially when they played the song beforehand .
Marching: there is a very firm posture to keep while marching. There’s two different ways to march either the band way or the drumline way which are similar styles but very different. When you get graded you get a number One through Five, One being the best and Five being the worst. The woodhaven marching band got all One’s again.
