Stretch for the Finish

The Warrior boys swim team completed their season, placing 3rd in the Downriver League with all the divers going Regionals with one advancing to the State meet.

The swim team had a great start to their league meet. Senior James Talbott performed exceptionally well, securing second place in the 100Y and 50Y Freestyle events, and making it to the finals for both. Talbott expressed his satisfaction with his performance, saying, “It felt really good knowing I’d finish my career facing the best guys in the league. I wanted the best competition as I knew that’s what would push me further than I had ever been before.”

Overall, the swim team felt they had different things they wanted to focus on going into the league meet, but they had one goal in common to be present moment and acknowledge the opportunity they had in front of them. Senior Talbott explains, “I felt more ready going into this year’s leagues than I ever have because of this team. We all supported each other and I knew everyone would give it their all.” The team always fought for each other and not for themselves.

The team’s momentum continued to build as Sophomore Alex Vasquez also made it to the finals for the 200Y and 500Y Freestyle events, securing fourth place in both. Vasquez says, “It was exciting to make it to finals in all events as a sophomore, and made me realize how much I’ve improved in only a year.”

In diving, Teygen Grossenheider-Albano had an impactful first season diving. Grossenheider-Albano placed 7th out of 11 divers in the Downriver meet. With Regionals right around the corner,  Grossenheider-Albano and Donavan Crawford, both sophomores, prepared to perform their best at Regionals where they competed with all of the Division 2 schools. When the results came in, Grossenheider-Albano realized that his 8th place finish qualified him for States. Grossenheider-Albano says, “I went out there my first year and qualified for the states. I would think not that many, but here I am and it’s kind of cool.”

Grossenheider-Albano dove at Eastern Michigan University to compete with some of the best divers across the State. He placed 36th overall, which means he placed top 40 in the State for his first year in diving. He has two more years to try and make it back to states, to try to be in the top 10.
