Woodhaven High School is a well-known school in the Downriver area. However, most people don’t think much about their hall monitors. Jeff Baker is a hard-working hall monitor, working to keep the students safe in and out of the building. One of our news reporters interviewed Jeff about his job as a hall monitor.
1. What do you enjoy the most about working at Woodhaven High School? “I enjoy the kids the most. Having relationships with the students is one of the benefits that I enjoy working here.”
2. How do you handle conflicts between students? “Try to understand both sides of what’s going on try to be reasonable with the students, and try to be helpful.”
3. What’s the most challenging part of your job? “I think the most challenging part would be the Altercations with other students trying to break them up. That’s very challenging because you never know what they’re going to do.”
4. How do you stay alert during long shifts? “I try and pace myself, I typically have a cup of coffee in the morning.”
5. How many cups of coffee do you drink in the morning? “Two in the morning, unless I get really tired, and I have another one in the afternoon.”
6. What advice would you give a student who’s staying on campus in a school? “That’s a good question. I would just tell them to be observant of what’s going around in their area. If there is any trouble or anything, try to find somebody who can help you.”
7. Can you share a memorable moment you’ve experienced while working at Woodhaven? “Yes. That would be during the football games. I believe it was one of the homecoming games when we actually beat the other team pretty good on the other football team.”
8. How do you work with teachers and other staff to ensure a student’s safety? “We try to coordinate together to make sure everybody’s safe and keep the doors locked so nobody can get in from outside. We usually have safety meetings with admins regarding the safety of the school and the students.”
9. How do you handle emergencies like fire drills or lockdowns? “I have my own area that I have to make sure students are either out of the building or in the area where they’re supposed to be. Like, for instance during the tornado drills, they do not go outside. They have to go to a certain classroom with no glass and stuff like that.”
10. Do you think the student understands your role here? “I think the majority of them do. I think they understand what we’re here for and you know basically here to help them and try to lead them in the right way. I think the majority think that.”
Jeff Baker is a great guy, and everyone adores him. Even though he may not be qualified to be a hall monitor. Jeff alone captured the hearts of every student and teacher at Woodhaven High School. All we can say is that he is the man.
