On May 14th, Woodhaven High School’s DECA chapter celebrated all of their many achievements for the year at their end of the year meeting. Students received recognition for their accomplishments at DECA district, state, and international conferences. Senior students that have participated in two or more years of DECA received a blue and white honor cord with a DECA diamond charm on it to wear at their graduation ceremony.
All of this was incredibly special, but the main event of the day was the celebration of marketing teacher Lisa Meyer’s retirement. After 31 years of service, her teaching journey is coming to an end at the conclusion of the spring semester. Her colleagues and students worked together to prepare a surprise party that she would remember for years to come. They purchased cupcakes, gifted photo frames and flowers made by Mr. Brian Taylor and Mrs. Rachel Crawford, and planned an extra special surprise: alumni students of Mrs. Meyer were invited back to honor her and send her off. They all gathered in the PBLZ while she wasn’t looking. When she turned around, there were so many familiar faces there to support her.
“It was wonderful to be recognized and remembered by my former students. I have been blessed over the years with wonderful students and colleagues” says Meyer.
From students that graduated last year all the way back to her very first year of teaching, so many people whose lives were impacted by her came back to send her well wishes. They laughed together, shared memories, and even brought along old DECA papers to look at. In addition to that, many former students that could not attend sent her heartfelt messages on social media as they have kept in touch over the years.
One thing is for sure: Mrs. Meyer will be greatly missed. From her funny jokes, to her long-winded stories about her family, Woodhaven High school will never be the same without her.
