Summer is upon us, and with that, newfound boredom may set in if you don’t have a job. If you are struggling to find something to do, going on adventures with your friends or family is a great option. There are many local things you can do, such as going to the park; however, if you are interested in things that aren’t just a walk away but still within an hour’s drive, there are many options.
If you are looking to explore your wild side, there are two incredible zoos within an hour’s drive of the high school. The Detroit Zoo and the Toledo Zoo are notable choices.
The Detroit Zoo has over 2,000 different animals and over 200 different species. The General Admission for this zoo is $27, not including the eight-dollar parking fee. It’s not incredibly expensive for a multi- hour endeavor. There have been 3 baby lion cubs added to the zoo, who are still waiting to be named. If you would like to vote for a name, you can sign up through the website.
The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium is one of my favorite things to do. Not only do they have over 16,000 animals, but over 680 different species. It cost $ 32 dollars in total; however, if you happen to get the dual membership for the cost of $95, – which includes one adult and an unnamed guest. If you go at least three times, you will get your money’s worth. The Toledo Zoo has 10 baby animals, not including the 5-month-old giraffe Eugene, who has been very popular on the Facebook page. Also on May 22, 2026, they opened their newly renovated reptile house, which expanded the exhibits and made better viewing areas for the attendees.
If zoos aren’t really your thing and would prefer something artsy, the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA) is about a half hour away and free to anyone who lives in Wayne County. This museum has over 65,000 pieces of artwork and is in the top six of the nation. If you are interested in a peaceful visit, this could be the perfect place for you.
