Having a safe school is a top priority for the Woodhaven-Brownstown school district. That being said, there is a new security system called Centegix. On each teacher’s lanyard, there is a button that teachers must press in case of an emergency. Whenever the button is pressed, it sends out different signals; each signal is unique depending on how many times it has been pressed.
The button can be pressed up to three times; any more would be an immediate emergency, and it’ll notify the staff based on how many times the teacher hits the button. Say, if there was a fight or a medical emergency in a classroom, the teacher would press the button 3 times to notify that they need help immediately; however, 8 presses would mean there’s a threat in the school, and it would trigger a lockdown. This feature is one of the safest protocols that the Woodhaven-Brownstown school district has put in place, having the ability to lock down the school in your hands if an emergency is to ever happen.
6th-grade teacher Stephanie Jaskolski gives her feedback, stating, “I think the best part is I don’t have to leave the situation and look for a phone to call down to the office,” she said, on The Detroit News. Having the button has positively affected the way staff members are able to handle situations. At Woodhaven High School, student Erika Kuhn has an opinion on the safety system too, “I believe that the new safety system will help protect students and their well beings all while teachers can assess a situation quicker.”
At the end of the day, having a safety system that can be used by a simple button will save lives and help situations de-escalate. The safety systems before have lacked specific safety measurements, such as having to leave safety while trying to find help. The new system will help keep our school safe and help ease our worries.
