Woodhaven High School had 18 students (listed below) qualify for DECA’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC) based on their performance at States on March 5-7. This international competition will be held on April 25-28th in Atlanta, Georgia, with over 25,000 high school students and their advisors attending.
Another key point for participants will be multiple professional development activities, where students will learn more about retail operations in a school setting. When asking a third-year DECA student, Abby Berry, what she is most looking forward to about the event, she stated,” I’m most looking forward to a conference that my partner and I have to go to for our event. It’s supposed to basically be a meet and greet of a bunch of schools that run a store to learn new strategies for selling and what other schools are doing to succeed.“
When they are in Georgia, it is more than just the competition. According to Mr. Taylor, “ students will explore several Atlanta attractions, including Zoo Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and dining at Atlanta’s Restaurant Row during the DECA ‘Rock the Block’ block party event.”
While at the conference, Adande Thorne, better known as sWooZie, will be giving a speech. SWoozie is a YouTube personality, actor, comedian, and animator. His YouTube Channel has over 1.4 billion views. He makes real-life-based animated videos and has sparked a new generation of animation. He will be speaking on how passion and motivation can lead you to success.
“DECA brings a lot of value to students who may be looking for a career in business. Going to the competitions, they have the opportunity to show off their marketing skills, interact with business professionals, and be recognized for the hard work they have done all year.”–Mrs. Meyer.
As a result of this event, the Woodhaven High School students did not take home the DECA glass (top three overall award), but the ICDC competitors did a great job!
Congratulations to those who qualified!
