A new policy has changed the way students get snacks during the day. Students who leave class to go to the vending machines for a snack will now have to stay, as teachers have begun enforcing stricter rules on going to the vending machines. The policy has been issued due to students frequently leaving class to go use the vending machines, taking away instructional time in class.
The new policy will allow students to use the vending machines during passing time, lunch, and before or after school. Some students feel that the policy helps reduce distractions during class time, while others feel that it makes the school day harder.
“I think students should be able to go out whenever they want for the vending machines because students could be hungry,” said senior Lina Jumah, but she also says, “Although I can see why teachers wouldn’t like us going out because it disrupts class time, I feel like students should be allowed to go after instructions.”
The policy has led some students to bring their own snacks from home or even eat breakfast before school. Administrators have said that the policy has been issued to keep students focused and limit unnecessary use of hall passes. “We do not want students to use valuable instructional time to go to the vending machines to get a snack,” said Assistant Principal Peggy Carr-McMichael. “Every minute spent outside the classroom is a minute of learning lost.”
With some mixed opinions, the administration plans to keep the policy for the future. Administration hopes that it will help students better manage their time throughout classes.
The policy will continue to be enforced, and students will have to stay focused in class while keeping their energy up throughout the day.
