Woodhaven’s welding program took a tour to LIFT, where they got to learn a lot about LIFT and how they operate. LIFT is an organization that is sponsored by the Department of War and works with many colleges to train students. Lift helps bring ideas from citizens to the government, if you have an idea to learn more about sharing your idea visit LIFT’S website. LIFT can also be recognized as a trade school, where you can learn and get your qualifications for welding, CNC machining, industrial technology maintenance, and robotics.
LIFT runs a local program free of charge for Detroit residents, addressing the shortage of skilled trade workers. LIFT’s mission is to expand industrial technology education for both industrial advancement and everyday life. At Woodhaven High School, welding instructor Mr. Prichard also teaches at LIFT. I asked Mr. Prichard why people should choose this program over trade schools or some colleges. Mr. Prichard said, “It is a great opportunity for young, skilled workers who live in Detroit to further their skills for free. The huge loss of trade workers every year affects the country; LIFT is always welcome to train new applicants. The demand for tradesmen is at an all-time high. Even if a local union is accepting new apprentices, apprenticeships can only get you so far, but if you go to a program to further your education in a skilled trade, you can further your skills and your career. If you are interested in LIFT, you can even sign up for a free tour to see if this would be a good place to further your education. Mr. Prichard says, “Even if I didn’t work here, I would have gone for myself; it is an opportunity that no one can pass up.” If you have any questions, make sure to check out LIFT.
