It’s that time of year when high school seniors are receiving their acceptance letters, and with them comes one of the biggest decisions of their academic careers, which college to attend. Unlike the college application process, which focuses on deadlines and essays, the college selection process requires students to compare their college options, and choose a school where they can grow, not just as students, but also as young adults.
For many seniors, location and affordability are among the first few factors to consider. Staying close to home can reduce housing costs, provide easier transportation, and allow students to have part-time jobs while staying near family. “I want to choose something close to home that’s affordable. Also, I want to stay close to family, and find a good job while I’m in college,” said senior Kris Maxhari.
Academics are also another major part of the decision. Students are looking for schools with good programs and internships. Students should look at all the options available at the college they’re considering, such as costs, grants, and scholarships. So that they can see whether they meet the financial and academic goals for that school. “I would say to look for the school that has the best program for your career route. Also, look for any scholarships, grants, or internships,’’ said senior Adam Jumah.
School counselors are also an important part of helping students organize their choices. “These are the top three factors that you should consider when choosing your college. Does the college have the major I’m interested in? What is financially the best option? And lastly, how does the campus environment feel? I suggest students rank their top choices after considering these three things,” said school counselor Jenna Hegan.
Another part of choosing a college is to see how your daily life will be. Students should check class sizes, activities, and the environment to see if the school feels like a good fit for them.
In the end, the college selection process is about finding a school where students can succeed and feel supported, creating an environment where students can grow academically and personally.
