National Honor Society, more commonly known as NHS, has been a club known for helping out the community and, as said in the name, being honorable to one’s society. Being a part of this club has many other benefits such as looking really good on college applications, some might say it improves the students morale, not to mention the encouragement to keep high educational standards. In order to be a member of NHS one must complete 30 volunteer hours during the school year this may include 10 hours that have been completed over the summer and maintaining a 3.75 GPA. If either of these things are not up to standard you may be put on probation, if the problem isn’t fixed within the next semester you may be kicked out of the organization.
At Woodhaven High School we are lucky to have great officers and teacher support. Teachers that are in charge of this extracurricular activity are Mrs. Laurel Kucharski, Mrs. Marissa Janice, and Mr. Trevor Dobruk. The elected NHS officers include President Chukwuemeka (Emeka) Ogbonna and other board members Ava Gray, JaMya Smith, Eva Smith, and Yumna Chaudry. These are the people responsible for finding the majority of the volunteering opportunities for the members.
This year there has been an ample amount of different charity drives that NHS has been a part of. According to Emeka and Mrs. Kucharski, some of the most recent drives have been, “winter/warm clothes drive, red cross blood drive, hygiene products for WOW (Women of Woodhaven), and we are currently participating in a downriver canned food challenge”. Donating something will give the member 1 volunteer hour.
These collection drives have proven to be extremely effective. Our school donated 36 pints of blood, saving over 100 lives. Woodhaven High School will be hosting another blood drive in the spring. Around 90 different items such as socks, hats, and gloves were collected to donate to kids in need for the Winter Gear drive, with many more successes to come.
Volunteering and participating in the collection drives are not only for NHS students. In fact, it is highly encouraged for all people to help out within their community.
