Woodhaven High School’s Unified basketball team faced the Woodhaven Police Department in its annual game, giving students, officers, and the community a night to feel included and welcomed. This event brings all students together so that everyone can feel included in the community. This isn’t just a basketball game; it’s much more than that.
The event is planned for students who have disabilities, and is a day for them to remember. It’s a day for them to enjoy, have fun, and feel welcomed, while playing the game in a supportive atmosphere. Unified sports combine students with and without disabilities on the same team, making sure everyone has the chance to participate. The event is held each year to give students of all disabilities the chance to play basketball. This year’s game was the students’ team against the Woodhaven Police Department, with the Woodhaven Unified team aiming for a fourth consecutive win.
It was a hard-fought battle and an exciting game from start to finish. In the end, Woodhaven Unified came out on top with a final score of 104–97. While the competition added excitement, the main goal of the night was to participate and encourage everyone playing. “This is so special because it promotes and celebrates inclusion, teamwork, and the power of belonging. Unified sports gives students the chance to compete, gain confidence & be recognized for their strengths,” said Mrs. Flynn, the District’s Unified Coordinator.
Throughout the game, players cheered and celebrated for each other. Students in the stands supported both teams, creating a positive and welcoming environment. The event allows students to enjoy the sport. While building a positive relationship in the community.
The night also included senior athletes and partners Brayden Henne, Kaylee Kilgore, Kylie Digna, Ben Wendt, and Makenzie Johnson. Families, friends, staff, and community members filled the stands to show their support. Volunteers and local organizations, including Joe Maroon Photography, The Downriver News Network, MI Cookie Project, and Rev’d Up Fun helped make this event such a success. The annual unified basketball game continues to be an important tradition, giving students the chance to have fun and feel included.
