JV girls basketball endures an uphill battle mid-season

The lady warriors pushed to make a comeback against the Southgate Titans, who they previously competed against in a nail-biter at the beginning of the season. Although they tried their best on the court, they could not come out on top.

This left hope that when they matched them later in the season, the Warriors would walk out with a win.

Before this game, the Warriors played a huge Woodhaven rival: The Allen Park Jaguars. The first game against this team was a battle, but after a tough loss, the Warriors were focused on making a comeback and working endlessly to win the second matchup.

When they played the Jags for the second time, all of the hard work at practice paid off, and the lady warriors left with a win. They hoped to carry this momentum to the game against Southgate.

Chloe Tostige, a sophomore on the team explained the rut that the team went through, and how the team worked together to accomplish season goals. Tostige stated, “The team experienced tougher practices. We knew that if we wanted to win we needed to carry the motivation from the Allen Park match into future games.”

The Warriors took the lead in the first half scoring 22 points against Southgates 18, but could not keep up in the second half.

The team wrote up more plays and practiced executing them to show Southgate something new. Although the team worked hard, Southgate played better than anticipated which did not allow them to execute everything practiced.

The game ended with a score of 29-44 with the Warriors shortly falling behind.

Sophomore Breanna Urban ended the game as the lead scorer with a total of 12 points. Shortly behind, Addi Zachman, Jayelynn Lines, and Leah Holt all put 4 points each on the board in early quarters.

Another challenge presented to the Warriors was that the Titans brought down players from the varsity team to compete at a lower level.

This alteration was unexpected and presented a challenge that the Warriors needed to overcome. Sophomore Alanna Gorham commented, “They brought down 7 girls which was a challenge we had to push through because we were basically playing a varsity team.”

Although the basketball team could not end victorious against Southgate, there is hope for another win in the future.
